Make Your Own Business Cards - Why it is Such a Bad Idea!

Are you thinking about going into business for yourself? Have you thought about how you could make your own business cards and print them out yourself? There are reasons why this is a horrible idea and there are reasons why people still do it. Here is what you need to know.

First, when it comes to your business you should never settle for anything less than the best, especially with marketing. Since word of mouth is the strongest form of advertising you need to make sure that you back it up with something that can be given to potential clients that looks great. This is usually a card with your information on it, but it needs to look professional and not homemade.

Second, when you make your own business cards you will save some cash, but it is not very much. It will cost you about $10 to purchase all the paper you need in order to print a full 1,000 business cards. You also have to figure in the price of the ink and the time it will take you to design these cards if you make your own business cards.

Last, you could spend as little as $20 and get very professional business cards. That is a price for 1,000 of them also so why would you even consider doing it yourself? When it comes to the face of your business you need a professional look and you do not want your cards to look like you made them at home. That just makes your business seem tacky and cheap.

How Your List Affects Postage Costs

The quality and accuracy of address information in mailing lists is one of the areas least understood and largely overlooked by most businesses using direct mail. To get an advertising message delivered the address must be correct! Many firms that use direct mail neglect this vital aspect. Is there a “printing” mentality of creating “one” and reproducing it “thousands” of times? The “one to one” aspect of valuing each individual’s information must be applied to every single record in a list.

Quality data entry and following input guidelines consistently generates accurate street, city, province and postal code information. Consistent data entry also improves the ability to match records and eliminate duplicates. Every duplicate mailed results in a poor company image and costs double in printing, mail processing and postage to reach the same person twice. Direct marketers need to be concerned about how many duplicates are in the list, determine how much it is costing and ask what can be done about it!

What may look like a correct address may not be true when compared against the Canada Post master list of all addresses in Canada. To receive the reduced postage rate for mailings of 5,000 or more, a list will go through a computer process to verify or “validate” that the addresses are deliverable. It must show a 95% rate of accuracy to qualify for the usual postage. A penalty of 5 cents each will be added to the regular postage cost for those records below 95%. What does this mean? On a mailing of 20,000 records, attaining an accuracy rating of 75% is 20% below the required percentage. 20% of 20,000 records is 4,000 invalid records x 5 cents = $200 additional in postage to send out mail that may not get delivered.

If it costs approximately $1.00 per record for printing, mail processing and postage for 4,000 addresses that may end up in the recycle bin anyway, you have now spent $4,200 more on your mailing with no sales results. It is cost effective to look at those records deemed “invalid” and correct or eliminate them before your next mailout.

Records are deemed “invalid” when the street, city, province and postal code information do not reflect a “deliverable” destination and can be caused by any of the factors listed below.

Common Errors Affecting Address Accuracy

Obsolete postal codes
Invalid or missing postal codes
No street direction included in address
Numbered street name entered incorrectly
Station qualifiers missing for post office boxes and rural routes
Non address information in address fields
Unusual characters and unnecessary punctuation

Obsolete postal codes
Many rural delivery services have been restructured by Canada Post and now include the civic address and/or a new postal code. Re-development and growth of older urban areas, amalgamation of towns and growth of urban areas can create restructuring resulting in new postal codes being assigned. Therefore, addresses that were once correct may now be out of date and undeliverable.

Invalid or missing postal codes
Data entry of postal codes could be incorrect or not included at all! The postal code can be tricky to input. Here is how a postal code should be input: V6P 2K7. There should be no hyphen between the first 3 and the last 3 characters, simply put one space not two or none and use capitals for the letters.

No street direction included in address
You must specify the complete direction of an address. Examples:

34 AVE NE 800 GEORGIA ST W 24 ST E

There may be a 34 AVE NW so if it is input as 34 AVE or 34 AVE N, the postal code will not match. There could be an 800 GEORGIA ST E so without the full address and the right direction the record may be deemed “invalid”.

Numbered street name entered incorrectly
Treat numbered streets like any other street name and enter them like this: 468 23 ST
Do no put “23rd St”. That is old fashioned and confuses computer programs. Same goes for 25th, 22nd and 1st. Numbered streets with a letter attached to it like “23A ST” should have the “A” right next to the number.

Spelling errors
Street names, city names and provinces must be spelled correctly. Streets like “Georgia” often appear as “Georgai”, cities like “Mississauga” or “Tsawwassen” can easily be misspelled. And provinces should be two letters only, with no punctuation. This has created confusion as previously there were province abbreviations like Alta for Alberta which is now AB. Nfld for Newfoundland which is now NL (and this has recently been changed from NF)!

Station qualifiers missing for post office boxes and rural routes
A postal station is identified by a “station qualifier”. Example: PO Box 436 STN C. The station qualifier “STN C” must be present along with the PO Box 436. There could be 20 postal stations in a city with a PO Box 436, but STN C tells the post office in which outlet the PO Box is located. Be sure and include that part!

There are also retail postal outlets in office buildings, 7-11 Stores, etc. The qualifier is usually an “RPO” designation. Example: PO Box 457 RPO Bentall

Rural addresses must include the “station”. RR 4 STN MAIN

Non address information in address fields
Non delivery information such as the name of a building like “The Pender Building” is not considered to be “delivery information” and will confuse the Address Validation and Correction program. If you wish to include the building name, place it in the field above the actual street info. Computer processes read addresses from the bottom up starting with the postal code, province, city, street2, street1 information in that order.

Unusual characters and punctuation
The post office uses high speed scanners to process machineable mail. A number sign # should not appear in the address.

Rural addresses like “R.R. #5 STN MAIN” should be input as “RR 5 STN MAIN”.

COMP 52 SITE 13 RR 5 is more easily scanned and matched than
COMP. 52, SITE 13, RR #5. This format also saves keystrokes on data entry!

Commas and unnecessary inclusion of the period (.) should be avoided as scanners are looking for letters and numbers only.

Preferred input style for apartments: 345 MAIN ST APT 301
Acceptable style: 301 – 345 MAIN ST

When an address relates to a “4th floor” rather than a suite input it as: 400 – 341 MAIN ST
or else place the “4th floor” in the street1 field and “345 MAIN ST” in the street2 field.

WHAT YOU CAN DO NOW

1. Create quality data entry guidelines and maintain consistency of data entry.

2. Keep your list current and have it run through the Address Correction and Validation program at least once a year no matter what size your list is. This procedure will “correct” or “reformat” most addresses and generate a report showing your percentage of Address Accuracy. The updated list will include a new field coded in such a way to show which records were “corrected” and are “invalid”. You may then take action to update your database.

3. Eliminate duplicates with your updated, refreshed and reformatted addresses to save yourself lots of money on your next mailing.

Costly Web Copy Pitfalls

One secret to a site that sells: Look at your site from your customer’s perspective. Another secret: Watch out for these common web copy pitfalls.

Welcome to…nothing

Look at your site’s web copy. Does it begin with “Welcome to…?” If so, get rid of it. It means nothing. It doesn’t speak to your customers. It’s just a waste of your customers’ time and space. Rather than the worn out phrase, “Welcome to…” try a statement that captures the essence of your company, explaining it in terms that’ll benefit your customers. Instead of “Welcome to Crazy Dave’s CD Emporium,” try “Crazy Dave’s CD Emporium, where you can find quality CDs and crazy prices.”

Where do I go?

If you track your site’s metrics, look at your customers’ paths. How many customers get past the home page? If it’s less than desired, there might be a problem with your site’s navigation. If you’re one of those people with mega-content sites, add an internal search to help your customers find there way. If you’re a smaller site, add navigation bars that update automatically when your site’s structures changes or evolves.

“It’s all about me.”
Your site is supposed to be about your customers not you. Let’s face it: Your customers don’t care about your Nobel Prize or that you were the first person to sell a condominium on Jupiter, they do care, however, about how your expertise can help them.

Quick tip: Visit your site. Does the copy contain more “we,” “me,” and “I” statements than “you” and “your?”

Marco…Polo

Have you ever visited a site to be sold on the product, then when you needed to ask a quick question, you couldn’t find their contact information? The solution: Put at least an email address or phone number on each page, preferably at the top or bottom. Then put more detailed contact information on your contact page.

Rarely read but really important.
Just the presence of terms and conditions and privacy policies instills confidence in your product. It also eases the minds of your more anxious customers.

Vague, iffy, testimonials

Testimonials are the easiest and perhaps the best way to capture your customers’ attention and confidence. But simple statements saying that your product is good, won’t work. Detailed testimonials praising how much your product improved their life work best. Another way to give testimonials more selling power, get a picture. Even better, get a picture with you customer using your product or benefiting from your service.

Makes Sales With Good

The average Wal-Mart store does $46 million in sales each year while its Sam’s Club average store sells $56 million. Sam’s Club does almost no advertising. Those are old brands, you’re saying. What about some newer brands, Harry?OK, let’s look at Pets.com. Remember the dog sock puppet that starred in their commercials? It won awards, but not sales. In six months Pets.com had $22 million in revenues and spent four times that much on advertising. Off-base advertising creativity at work.

The Body Shop was built totally by publicity. No advertising at all. Starbucks, until recently, did virtually no advertising. It has built a brand through good PR efforts. Starbucks’ annual sales are around $1.3 billion, while advertising expenditures over 10 years, have totaled less than $10 million. Finally, what advertising agency do you know that has built its brand with ads? Things that make you go “hmm.”

Companies Appetite To Hit The Bazaar

Typically, companies appetite to hit the bazaar adamantine and accomplish a lot of noise. Announcement allows you to barrage quickly, ascendancy the message, and accept your bulletin in as abounding media as you accept the money for. How about you?PR takes time and does not necessarily assignment on your schedule.

Planting new account or alteration minds is a apathetic process. When your PR affairs rolls out over a best aeon of time, affairs accept time to acclimatize their attitudes. As the Ries’ say, “Publicity is the nail, announcement is the hammer.” What does this mean? It agency that your PR accomplishment helps accomplish your bulletin believable so that your announcement will accept believability back it hits.

Marketing 'Gurus': Do You Need One?

It's become fashionable to bash marketing "gurus" nowadays.

There are some for whom the prospect of even looking at someone as a "guru" is a sin. They believe in being free-thinkers, unfettered by the bonds of guru-dom. Then there are those who try to score points by "proving" gurus wrong. They think they have achieved a new high in their field just by proving that a "guru" made a false statement.

The problem with such people is that they refuse to understand "gurus" for what they are. So just what IS a guru (marketing or otherwise)? To put it simply, a guru is someone who has "been there, done that." A guru is not one who is meant to be followed like a sheep, nor one whose every word is written in stone.

Of the letters in the Sanskrit word "Guru ", the letter 'Gu' stands for darkness or ignorance; and the letter 'Ru' stands for the one who removes it or dispels it. A guru is one who imparts knowledge that clears the path of the seeker. Knowledge that helps the seeker gain a better understanding of himself. Unfortunately many people see gurus - and marketing gurus in particular - as successful, over-bearing, conceited boors.

Trust me, if a person was successful in this field, he'd never have got there by being over-bearing and conceited. Why? Because to be a success, you need other people to help you get there. And no one is going to do business with you if you're an over-bearing, conceited boor. So just why do you need a guru?

For the same reason you need a parent - to guide you when you are young and still learning the ways of the world. For the same reason you need a teacher - to introduce you to new concepts and ways of thinking you may never have conceived of. For the same reason you need a football coach - to teach you the rules of the game. For the same reason you need a mountain guide - to take you through treacherous terrain to a safer place.

Sadly, people only perceive gurus as someone to look up to with fear and disdain, or as someone to pull down so that one can feel important. They can never understand that a guru (or mentor, or teacher, or whatever you choose to call them) is just someone who can help cut their learning curve. Someone who can help you NOT re-invent the wheel, but continue where they left off. Someone who could share with you a new way of doing things that could benefit you in ways you could never imagine.

Few 'real' gurus - at least those worth learning from - will ever want to be called that. The ones who do are usually cocky, self-professed types, full of their own importance - and you'll learn more by avoiding them like the plague. The gurus to watch (note, I didn't say follow - as in sheep) and learn from, are the ones with a long track record of success. The ones who have repeatedly proved that their methods are legitimate and that they work. Not the flash-in-the-pan types, who come and go faster than you can say "bestselling ebook."

Not the ones who jump from one opportunity to the next and try to take you along for the ride. Not the ones who endorse everything from lunar real-estate to miracle cure-alls. And certainly not cocky little teenagers, who have never cut their teeth on real marketing. Don't expect your chosen guru to know everything about everything. Even gurus specialize in different areas of expertise. Just to give you an example, I respect Corey Rudl highly for his pioneering knowledge of marketing. But I would never take advice from him on getting high rankings in search engines.

For specialized knowledge like that, I would learn from someone who is a true expert in that field, like Dan Thies or Michael Campbell. Whether you're a newbie starting out on the internet, or an experienced marketer who has honed his skills to perfection, the one thing you can always benefit from is an open mind.

And a willingness to be taught.

So when you do choose a guru, guide, mentor or coach, pick one whose insight can help you see yourself - and what you have to offer - more clearly. One whose knowledge can show you how to bring out your own latent talents. And one whose guidance can help you grow into a seasoned and successful entrepreneur.

Looking for Sky In All The Wrong Places

Ever sit with a single puzzle piece of clouds and wonder how you will ever put the entire sky together? Life as an entrepreneur is often just like that-- lots of the little pieces, creating products, taking care of clients, wrestling with computers, finances, taxes, etc.-- and a whole lot of sky. The big open space where you create a successful and enjoyable business. There were many pieces of 'puzzle sky', I was drowning in an ocean of sky blue. After over a decade of struggling with my own company to fit all the 'pieces' together, I have finally put together the big business puzzle-- and it's not what I thought it would look like.

As a sponge for knowledge, I would constantly search for information to help me grow. Emblazoned in my mind was a quote that I stumbled upon by accident while researching William Shakespeare in the old, smelly, humid junior high library (thank goodness for the Internet). "Information is power" insightfully said by Sir Frances Bacon. At thirteen years old, I didn't exactly know what power was but I knew I didn't want to be a 'dork' or a 'druggie', like so many of my friends. So, I wanted power. So... I needed knowledge. I lived for it.

I became a "knowledge" junkie and didn't 'know' it. How ironic is that? I graduated from college with over twenty more credits than needed because I kept taking classes. A habit that carried into adulthood, waaay past college, anytime I tackle a new endeavor or head in a new direction... I take a class. A class-- the perfect place to get knowledge right? Yes, though I found I gave up something for that knowledge. And I didn't know it.

For me, every pursuit of knowledge was a piece of "puzzle sky." I was excited with the opportunity to learn something new. Exhilarated by the threshold of my undorkiness being expanded. Enamored with the teacher teaching me! Yet at the end of each 'learning' experience, something felt-- wrong. Yes, I had gained a piece of knowledge but felt empty and unattached. So, I would throw myself into another class, another learning opportunity-- ever on my quest for power. I had no idea that with each learning experience, I was instead seeking permission for the new undertaking and was sidetracked by the high I got from the experience of learning. (Gosh, I hope I'm not the only one.)

With more and more people leaving their cushy corporate job, there's an explosion of entrepreneurial workshops and seminars teaching you how to be more, make more, more, more, etc. With all these portals of power, how do you know what's valuable information? Every one of these workshops and the information they offer are a benefit to you-- ONLY IF it is part of your larger picture. So let me help you now... you don't need permission to "see" exactly what is inside you daring to come out.

To be successful you must dare to learn, surround yourself with knowledge, savor each individual learning experience, HOWEVER always hold it in relationship to your big picture-- your success sky.You must have a clear vision of the sky... your sky. No one else's. You get to establish if it's blue or green. You get to establish is it's clear or cloudy. You even get to establish if it's up or down. The important thing is that you "see" it, establish it, create it by surrounding yourself with knowledge to supports that vision.

The next time you are considering taking a course or workshop for your business, ask yourself these three simple questions:

1. What is my sky?

2. Which piece of my "sky puzzle" does the course fulfill?

3. Can this knowledge help me "see" my sky better or help me create it faster?

Knowing the answers will ensure you get actually what you need.

After all my years of knowledge hunting, I'm amazed to find I am now in the
knowledge-sharing business. Of course, I learned how in an incredible workshop :)
(Email me at info@whybrandu.com I'll tell you about it!). I know you can accomplish
whatever you want. It just takes the right individuals to remind you and expand your
knowledge. I'm honored to have the opportunity to be one of them.
